Do More Car Accidents Happen During Rush Hour? We Checked 3 Big Freeways in LA County

Rush hour traffic

Depending on where you are, rush hour can be a dangerous time for drivers.

Rush hour is defined as “a time during the day early in the morning or late in the afternoon when many people are traveling on roads to get to work or to get home from work”.

This is despite the fact that traffic in Los Angeles sometimes feels like it’s on a never ending loop!

It’s safe to say car accidents happen on a seemingly hourly basis.

Car accidents can be both frustrating and traumatic for the victims.  Not only is there a potential for car damage, but the chances of suffering a personal injury comes with the territory.

One might wonder, are there more car accidents during rush hour as opposed to other periods of the day?

Let’s look at California accident data from UC Berkeley regarding some of Los Angeles’ busiest freeways.

On the 405, Monday through Friday, the time frame with the most car accidents is between 3 PM and 6 PM. Even the hours around it, from 12 PM to 3 PM and 6 PM to 9 PM have high accident rates.

In terms of rush hour in the morning, Monday has the second highest rate of accidents throughout the day.

The trend continues on the 101. The highest number of car crashes occurs Tuesdays between 3 PM and 6 PM as well.

This time period has the most accidents on the 101 everyday Monday through Friday.

On the 5, Fridays during the 3 PM to 6 PM time period sees the highest amount of car accidents.

On all freeways in Los Angeles County, the number of crashes is highest during rush hour, 3 PM until 6 PM.

Other time periods with high accident rates include:

12 PM until 3 PM

6 PM until 9 PM

Overall, there is an increase in rush hour accidents on Los Angeles County freeways between 3 PM and 6 PM.

If you were involved in a car accident during rush hour, you may be entitled to damages for any injuries as a result of the crash.

Driving during rush hour can already be a frustrating experience. Being stuck in traffic after a long day at work is one of the last things you want to experience.

The stress of being in traffic during rush hour can be made even worse after a car accident.
