Car Accidents on the 101 Freeway – Statistics that May Surprise You
The 101 freeway is often used by valley residents.
The 101 freeway runs north to south in California. More specifically in Los Angeles, it helps drivers get across the San Fernando Valley and to areas like Hollywood and Downtown LA.
The 101 freeway is also known for its fare share of car accidents.
Whether it’s someone not signaling as they merge onto the 134, or a car speeding to take the 405 near Sepulveda Boulevard, the 101 freeway seemingly has multiple spots ripe for car crashes.
UC Berkeley released a study with statistics regarding car accidents on the 101 freeway.
According to the report, there were 1,050 accidents on the 101 freeway in 2022.
Only two of the accidents were fatal, but 743 accident victims reported some pain or injury. That accounts for 70.76 percent of the accidents.
60 percent of all accidents reported were rear end collisions. That’s 172 percent higher than the second leading type of accident.
A read-end collision occurs when a driver smashes into the back of another vehicle, usually after following the vehicle too closely. It may happen if the vehicle in front comes to a sudden stop.
The National Safety Council reported that nationally, 41.6 percent of all car crashes are the result of a rear-end collision, more than any other accident type.
The only other accident types with more than 10 percent of the total number of crashes on the 101 freeway were:
Sideswipe – 20 percent.
Hit Object – 11.14 percent
The majority of all car accidents on the 101 freeway occur on Fridays between 3PM and 6PM. The number of crashes during this time period is at least 36 percent higher than any other period in the study.
Drivers suffered the most injuries amongst all victims. Over 75 percent of all victims in car crashes on the 101 freeway were drivers of the automobile.
Additionally, around a quarter of all victims were between the ages of 20 and 29. Injuries generally decrease as the age increases, with victims 85 and older accounting for only 10 total car crash injuries.
There were a number of factors affecting crashes. The most frequent accidents causes on the 101 freeway include:
Unsafe speed – 56 percent
Improper turns – 18 percent
Unsafe lane changes – 11.5 percent
Driving under the influence of either drugs or alcohol – 8.58 percent
Speeding is extremely dangerous, especially on freeways. Traveling at higher speeds can decrease a driver’s reaction time if another car were to stop in front of them.
Drivers who speed can greatly increase their chances of a rollover or losing control of the vehicle.
If you were hit by someone on the 101 freeway in an accident that led to a personal injury, you may be entitled to compensation.
