San Fernando Valley – 5 Most Dangerous Streets for Accidents

San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles at night

The San Fernando Valley is home to over 1.8 million Californians

In fact, the San Fernando Valley would be the fifth most populous city in the United States if it was a standalone. From Encino and Sherman Oaks to Sylmar and Granada Hills, or West Hills and Chatsworth to Burbank and Toluca Lake, the Valley is an enclave for various Angelenos.

Many others travel through the area, including employees who work on the lot or at studios, as well as tourists who visit the Universal Hollywood theme park.

While there are Metro Red Line stops in North Hollywood and at Universal, many drivers are still using busy streets around the San Fernando Valley to get from point A to B.

While the 1.8 million residents alone are enough to create traffic challenges, there’s even more congestion when others are added. It’s understandable that these factors greatly increase the risk for accidents.

Crashes are more prevalent in certain areas, depending on the street or neighborhood.

According to data collected from the Los Angeles Police Department, here are the 5 most dangerous streets for accidents in the San Fernando Valley:

Sherman Way – running east to west across the valley, there were 178 traffic collisions reported in 2022. In fact, the intersection of Sepulveda and Sherman Way in Van Nuys is often cited as one of the most accident prone areas in all of Los Angeles.

Vanowen Street – The next major street south of Sherman Way, Vanowen had 162 reported traffic collisions. The street runs near hubs in the San Fernando Valley like Hollywood Burbank Airport on the east, and Westfield Topanga on the west.

Ventura Boulevard – There were also 162 traffic collisions on Ventura Boulevard. Traffic congestion is likely due in part to Ventura Boulevard serving as home to some of the Valley’s top dining and shopping.

Sepulveda Boulevard –  The only road running north to south on this list, 160 traffic collisions were reported in the year 2022. Sepulveda is often an alternative choice for drivers commuting to and from the westside, looking to avoid the 405.

Roscoe Boulevard – Stretching through neighborhoods like Panorama City and Sun Valley, Roscoe Boulevard had a reported 153 traffic collisions. Serving as an exit along both the 405 and 170 most likely increases traffic flow.

In terms of San Fernando Valley car accidents, here are five neighborhoods known for more incidents:

Van Nuys – With a population of over 130,000 Angelenos, Van Nuys is the most populated Los Angeles neighborhood in the valley. It was also the location of 910 reported incidents.

LAPD data also reports that two of the most dangerous intersections are in Van NuysSherman Way and Sepulveda Boulevard, as well as Burbank Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevard

Glendale – With a population close to 200,000, Glendale is the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County. The city is home to great shopping at the Glendale Galleria and The Americana at Brand.

Could the mall traffic be a leading cause of accidents? There were 726 car crashes in Glendale.

Sherman Oaks – The setting of popular TV shows such as Black-ish and Never Have I Ever, Sherman Oaks is home to many residencies and restaurants. With high-traffic areas such as Van Nuys Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard, a plethora of car crashes occurred – a total of 705.

Northridge – Home to more than 38,000 students for the fall 2021 semester at Cal State University Northridge (CSUN), the neighborhood had 557 car crash accidents. An influx of traffic due to commuting students could be the cause – under 10 percent of the CSUN student body lives on campus.

Sun Valley – Known for a more residential feel with houses and families, Sun Valley is part of the north valley.  Surprisingly, there were 530 accidents in the neighborhood, more than higher populated areas like North Hollywood and Burbank.

Sepulveda Boulevard, a famous street that runs through Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley
