Burns and fires are a frequent cause of injuries and deaths in the United States. According to the CDC’s National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Survey, there were an estimated 404,000 emergency department visits related to burns across the nation in 2021. Like many other injuries, children tend to be more vulnerable to burn injuries.
Types
There are varying types of burn injuries, with some of the most common causes listed below:
Thermal Burns – Burns that are caused by sources of heat such as fire, hot liquids, steam, and heated metals. These burns can cause tissue cell death or black charring.
Radiation Burns – Burns that are caused by UV-rays, X-rays, radiation therapy, or other sources of radiation
Chemical Burns – Burns that are caused by strong acids, alkalis, detergents, or solvents. Some examples include battery acid, bleach, drain or toilet bowl cleaners, paint thinner, chlorinators, and concrete mix
Electrical Burns – Burns that are caused by alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) coming into contact with the body. Some examples include contact with stun guns, appliances, household current, or lightning
Classification
Burns are classified into different “degrees” of severity, with the higher degrees being more severe.
First-degree burns – These are also known as superficial burns. First-degree burns are typically not severe injuries, and only affect the outer layer of skin (epidermis). The burn site is left red, painful, and dry.
Second-degree burns – Second-degree burns damage both the epidermis as well as the layer underneath (dermis). These burns are more serious, and the burn site will be red, blistered, swollen, and painful.
Third-degree burns – These are very severe burns that destroy both the epidermis and dermis and can reach the innermost layer of skin called the subcutaneous tissue. The burn site will be white or blackened and charred.
Fourth-degree burns – This is the most severe classification of burns as they go through both layers of the skin and tissue and can even reach muscle, bone, and destroy nerve endings in the area.
