Drunk Driving Injuries and Fatalities – 5 Cities in Los Angeles County With the Highest Amount of Incidents
Drunk driving injuries and fatalities happen far too often.
According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), 926 people are injured every day in a drunk driving crash.
Closer to home, recent studies show that 18 percent of all adults in Los Angeles county reported heavy or binge drinking. This average is equal to the rest of the state.
There are many efforts to reduce drunk driving. There are various non-profit organizations like MADD and DARE that promote sober driving. Rideshare companies like Lyft have also touted statistics that show a decrease in drunk drivers (their website states a 40 percent decline in DUI’s since they were made available in Los Angeles).
Despite the awareness, there are still many people who decide to drive after heavy drinking.
Certain cities in Los Angeles county report more drunk driving injuries and fatalities than others. We’ve used data from the Transportation Injury Mapping System to compile a list of the five cities in Los Angeles County with the most drunk driving injuries and fatalities. This data covers the last five years:
Los Angeles – 261.7: Home to nearly four million Californians, LA is the second most populous city in the US. It should be no surprise that the most populous city in Los Angeles county is home to the most drunk driving injuries and fatalities.
Long Beach – 42.0: A large dip from LA, Long Beach is home to the second highest number of drunk driving injuries and fatalities. Long Beach is the second most populous city in LA county.
Palmdale – 19.7: The only city in the Antelope Valley, Palmdale has a smaller population, but a larger number of car accidents related to drunk drivers.
Pomona – 16.3: Located in the Pomona Valley, car accidents that led to injuries or fatalities were higher than areas that see higher daytime populations like Santa Monica and Culver City.
Santa Clarita – 12.3 – The city’s population was up nearly 30 percent from 2010 to 2020. Could an influx of residents increase crashes?
Burbank, the city where one of our offices is located, averaged 2.3 accidents with drunk driving injuries and fatalities. Specific data for our other office in Downtown Los Angeles was not available in this study.
Even though national drunk driving injuries and fatalities have steadily decreased over the last 40 years, there are still numerous people who decide to get behind the wheel of an automobile drunk.
The consequences of drunk driving accidents can be catastrophic.
