How To Change or Remove Contacts on iPhone’s Crash Detection Feature

Apple’s Crash Detection is designed to automatically contact emergency services — and even notify your emergency contacts — if it detects that you’ve been in a serious car crash. While it’s a potentially life-saving feature, you might want to review who gets alerted or disable the feature entirely. Here’s how.

Step 1: Open the Health App

Crash Detection uses the information stored in your iPhone’s Health App to identify your emergency contacts.

  • Open the Health App on your iPhone
  • Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner
  • Select Medical ID from the menu

Step 2: Edit Your Emergency Contacts

From the Medical ID section, you can:

  • Add new emergency contacts
  • Change existing ones
  • Remove people you no longer want notified

Tap Edit in the top-right corner, scroll to Emergency Contacts, and make your changes. Tap Done to save.

(Optional) Turn Crash Detection On or Off

If you want to enable Crash Detection, or disable it entirely:

  • Go to Settings → Emergency SOS
  • Scroll down and find Call After Severe Crash
  • Toggle it on or off

When this is turned on, your iPhone will attempt to detect severe car crashes and contact emergency services automatically — and notify your listed contacts.

Why This Matters

Keeping your emergency contact information current ensures the right people are notified if something happens. Taking a minute to check these settings can make a real difference during an emergency.
