5 Different Types of Car Accidents and How to Immediately React for Your Safety

a rollover is one of the major types of car accidents

There are many different types of car accidents that can result in serious injuries or death.

There were 26,132 victims killed or injured in different types of car accidents, according to the most recent numbers from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

You might think that a car crash is simple – one vehicle hits another, usually resulting in car damage, injuries, etc.

However, different types of car accidents can affect any destruction to your car or your injuries, depending where you were hit.

Here are 5 different types of car accidents –

Head-on Collision – one of the more dangerous types of car accidents, a head-on collision happens when two cars drive into each other at the front-end of the vehicle.  It’s not uncommon to see drivers or passengers ejected from vehicles in this type of crash.

T-Bone Accident – if your car was smashed by another car on its side, you’re involved in a t-bone accident. This type of crash is frequent at intersections, when another vehicle fails to halt at a stop sign or drives through a red light.

Angle collisions accounted for almost half of all car crashes with injuries.

Rear-end Collision – this type of accident occurs when another car slams into the back of the vehicle in front of it. This can happen as a result of tailgating, or driving too close to the car in front.

Another common place is at a red light or stop sign. Whiplash or other neck injuries are frequently associated with rear-end collisions.

Sideswipe – frequently occurring on freeways, a sideswipe occurs when two cars moving in the same direction touch, or swipe, the perimeter of the other vehicle. A sideswipe will often result in surface damage to the paint of a car.

Occasionally, it will lead to something worse if one of the drivers loses control of their vehicle.

Rollover – a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed has a greater risk of hitting another car. It can also lead to a rollover, where a car flips onto its side or roof.

This extremely dangerous accident puts the driver in a serious hazard, as well as others in the surrounding area.

Multi-vehicle accident – When more than two cars are involved in a crash, it’s classified as a multi-vehicle accident. What’s extremely alarming is that multiple types of car accidents can occur in just this incident.

For instance, your car can be involved in both a head-on collision and t-bone accident in a crash involving multiple vehicles.

t-bone accident is one of the many types of accidents one can find themselves in

Getting in any of these various types of car accidents is quite a terrifying experience. The sudden impact can send shockwaves throughout your body.

Frequent injuries stemming from these types of car accidents include:

  • Pain or injuries to your neck
  • Pain or injuries to your back
  • Pain or injuries to your spinal cord
  • Whiplash
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Broken or fractured bones
  • Sprains or torn ligaments
  • Cuts and lacerations
  • Internal bleeding or further organ damage
  • Scarring and disfigurement

It’s important to take care of yourself after an accident.  Follow these guidelines for post-accident safety

  • If you were injured, call 911 immediately.
  • Gather as much information about the other vehicle or vehicles involved in the crash, including license plate number, year, make, model, and color.
  • Get any other drivers contact information, including their driver’s license card number, insurance, and registration.
  • Document the incident. Make note of the time, day, date, and location.
  • Take photos and videos of the accident scene.
  • Injuries such as internal bleeding or a traumatic brain injury will most likely not have as immediate symptoms as a cut or broken bone. This shouldn’t prevent you from seeking medical attention.
  • Get in touch with your insurance. Let them know about the incident, and provide them with any documentation you recorded at the time of the accident.
